The effect of cultivation intensity and sprinkle irrigation on the yield of sugarbeet on rendzina.

In 1991-94 at GP Bezek near Chelm, Poland, sugarbeet crops were investigated with respect to 4 systems of postharvest and pre-winter cultivation of rendzina soil (without ploughing, minimal, classical, intensive), as well as with respect to varied water conditions (natural and optimised through sprinkler irrigation). Cultivation technique did not significantly decrease the yield of roots and sugar if full cultivation was applied to the fore crops (crop residues). However, each simplification of cultivation decreased leaf mass and increased protrusion of root tops above soil level. Sprinkle irrigation, independent of soil cultivation system, increased the yield of roots, leaves and sugar by an average over the years of 18%, 27% and 10%, respectively, over the controls, although the increase was much greater in drought years.
