Following increasing difficulties in storing peaches and nectarines experienced in Romagna in 1994 and 1995, storability and fruit quality characteristics were studied in 6 peach cultivars and 12 nectarine cultivars at the main Romagna peach packhouse and cold storage centres. Results showed that all the cultivars could be stored for 8 days but few of them retained a high enough quality if storage extended beyond this. For any cultivar quality was related to fruit size and harvesting date. TSS was higher in larger fruits and at earlier harvesting dates. Postharvest decay caused by Monilinia laxa increased as shelf life at 22-25 deg C was extended. After 5 days, rotting affected >30-50% of fruits of most cultivars in most cold stores.
