Storage as an integral part of the postharvest system is the most vulnerable period of grains to pest infestation that brings about significant losses. The deterioration process occurring during the storage period is very much determined by various factors, among these the initial quality of the grain, quality maintenance during storage, and the length of storage. The magnitude of deterioration occurring in storage can be used to determine the efficiency of storage management. Efficient storage management will keep quantitative and qualitative losses of the stored commodity within a range that is economically acceptable. Storage management basically covers management of procurement, distribution of the stored commodity, decision on length of storage, and quality maintenance of the stored commodity. Ideally it also includes knowledge of the commodity characteristics (such as grain properties), properties of chemical and non-chemical pesticides, and characteristics of other pest control measures.
