Changes in ethylene production and respiratory rate of flowers during flower opening and senescence were investigated in 14 commercial cut rose cultivars in China. For Samantha, Angelique, Mrtrfrd [sic], Gabriella and Athena, ethylene production was low at the bud stage, increased gradually as the outer petals opened, and reached a peak at full opening, before decreasing. This pattern was similar to that of ethylene climacteric cut flowers and fruits. Ethylene production in Prima Donna was initially low and changed little during flower opening and senescence, similar to ethylene non-climacteric cut flowers and fruits. Ethylene production in Tineke, Golden Times, Gold Emblem, Golden Medallion, Flamingo, Karolinal, Red Success and Marina was low at the bud stage and continuously increased until after full opening. The respiratory rate of all cultivars was like a typical respiratory climacteric type, being low at the bud stage and increasing markedly to a peak before full opening, before decreasing
. The respiratory climacteric peak was reached 1-2 days earlier than the ethylene climacteric peak in Samantha and Athena.
