In an experiment in the Po valley (Italy), spears of asparagus cv. Precoce d'Argenteuil were harvested for 60 days and then the ferns were allowed to develop until October when they became dormant. When they were dry they were removed and the soil tilled to a depth of 5 cm. Drip irrigation was then applied when the residual soil water in the 0.5-m surface layer reached 30%. The amount applied was equivalent to 30, 60 or 90% of the water lost by evapotranspiration during that growing season. The yield of high quality spears in the following season did not vary in relation to water applied even if the marketable product achieved a higher average weight when irrigated and comprised a higher proportion of the total yield. Irrigation rate had no significant effect on the proportion of small and unmarketable spears. The number of spears per crown was negatively influenced by irrigation. Dry matter production by the aerial parts and the number of ferns per crown were slightly higher in irrigated treatm
ents, but had no significant effects on the yields obtained the following year.
