Improving village storage of yams in Cote d'Ivoire.

During 1993 and 1994 field trials were conducted at Bringakro, Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire. Two types of yam, Dioscorea cayenensis cv. Krengle and D. alata cv. Florido, were stored for 6 months in pits and in sheds, using modified traditional techniques. The temperature and relative humidity varied more in the sheds than in the pits. The weight losses of Krengle were the same in pits and in sheds, whereas, Florido lost more weight in sheds than in pits. Krengle lost more weight than Florido in both systems. The relative weight of the Krengle sprouts was significantly greater in the pits than in the sheds. For Florido relative sprout weight was the same in the pits and sheds. In each phase of storage, the fresh weight losses for Krengle were much greater than for Florido.
