A combination of a controlled atmosphere (CA) flow-through system with modified atmosphere (MA) package was used to generate 50 combinations of O2 and CO2 partial pressures around Braeburn apples. The CA system had 10 levels of O2 partial pressures (0-21 kPa) in factorial combination with 5 MA bags, each with differing levels of effective permeance. Filters were used as modular barriers to gas diffusion to create variable levels of permeance. Product modification of the atmospheres within the bags, in conjunction with the variation of O2 levels achieved with the flow-through system, served to develop a diverse range of combinations of O2 and CO2 levels in individual packages. The combination of CA and MA approaches described is likely to prove a powerful tool in the characterization of responses of physiological processes to CA and in the optimization of CA mixtures for a wide range of commodities.
