A controlled atmosphere (CA) storage system (MASCA) is described which consists of a modified gas separation membrane type N2 gas generator, a gas tight CA room, O2 and CO2 monitoring, a sequence controller and an operation program. The gas separation membrane was made of polyimide hollow fibre. The N2-gas generator was modified, in order to regulate the O2 concentration in the N2-rich air, by fixing a pressure control unit between the air compressor and the gas separation membrane. Rapid pull down of O2 was achieved by supplying N2-rich air from the generator until the desired O2 level was reached. When the O2 level decreased to the critical concentration, air was flushed from the compressor of the generator. MASCA built up the CO2 level with the CO2 evolved from the stored commodity. When the CO2 level reached the critical point, the CA room was ventilated with N2-rich air which contained the desired level of O2 to prevent further build up of CO2 without affecting O2 concentration in the CA ro
om. Results of trials with shiitake mushroom (Lentinus edodes) [Lentinula edodes], broccoli, cabbages and Japanese apricots (Prunus mume) are described. Compared with storage in air, MASCA storage reduced the respiration rate in all commodities, delayed chlorophyll loss in broccoli and cabbages, suppressed ethylene evolution and colour development in Japanese apricots, retained ascorbic acid content in broccoli and cabbages, and prolonged the storage life of all commodities.
