Over sea & over land putting CA research and technology to work for international shipments of fresh produce.

Developments in international shipment of fresh produce via refrigerated ocean containers (reefers) are described and the advantages and disadvantages of the various controlled atmosphere (CA) systems available to ocean carriers are outlined. The world fleet today consists of 38 000 refrigerated containers capable of providing CA services (over 4 times that available in July 1993). Approximately 1000 of these units can provide both high humidity levels and O2 and CO2 control simultaneously.
