Overview of controlled atmosphere transportation in containers.

During the last few years, use of controlled atmosphere (CA) storage has become increasingly important in refrigerated transport by sea. These CA shipments are carried out using specially equipped reefer vessels or CA containers. An overview is given of stand-alone container systems, their technical equipment, their market share (where data is available) and costs of CA transport and equipment. CA conditions for >40 temperate, tropical and subtropical fruits and vegetables are tabulated.
