The effects of chitosan on soft rot of peach fruits at room temperature or 4 deg C were investigated. When fruits were treated with chitosan (5 or 10 mg/litre) after inoculation with R. stolonifera followed by 4-8 or 30 days of storage at room temperature or 4 deg , respectively, disease was reduced. The disease control effect was equivalent to that of prochloraz (0.5 mg/litre). Chitosan inhibited radial growth of R. stolonifer and M. fructicola in vitro. At concentrations of >2 mg/litre, chitosan induced excessive branching, hyphal swelling and shortening of hyphal segments in R. stolonifer and M. fructicola, and induced plasmolysis in hyphal cells of R. stolonifer.
