During 1989-92, the fungal species occurring in dry rot of potato (cv. Mila) tubers under natural conditions was investigated. Samples of tubers were harvested at the Agricultural Experimental Station Mydlniki of the University of Agriculture in Krakow, Poland, and analyses were conducted in the autumn (1 month after harvest) and in spring after 7 months storage. From a total of 120 tubers, 1232 fungal isolations were made which were identified as 24 species and 13 genera. In the autumn Alternaria alternata prevailed, constituting 30.6% of all the isolates followed by Rhizoctonia solani 13.1%, Fusarium sulphureum [Gibberella cyanogena] 12.2%, Colletotrichum coccodes 9.9%, F. coeruleum [F. solani var coeruleum] and F. culmorum 7.7% each. In the spring G. cyanogena 29.7%, F. solani var coeruleum 18.2%, F. culmorum 7.5% and A. alternata 6.7% were the prevalent species.
