Effect of hydrocooling with or without fungicides on whisker's rot of July Elberta peaches.

The effect of immediate or delayed hydrocooling with or without dicloran, sodium orthophenylphenate or carbendazim for the control of whisker's rot (caused by Rhizopus stolonifer) in peaches (cv. July Elberta) was studied. Inoculated fruits were hydrocooled by dipping them in plain ice water for 30 min. One set of fruit were cooled immediately whereas another 2 sets were hydrocooled 24 and 36 h after inoculation, respectively. Immediately after cooling all the sets of fruit were stored for 3 days at 5, 10, 15 and 20 deg C. In general, the Rhizopus rot progressed slowly at lower temperatures but almost complete rotting occurred at 15 deg C or above. Hydrocooling with dicloran (300 micro g/ml) of inoculated peaches was highly effective followed by exposure of treated peaches to 5 or 10 deg C for 3 days. The decay was much higher in hydrocooled peaches without fungicides. The fungicidal hydrocooling was less effective at 0 and 36 h than at 24 h cooling intervals possibly due to the high sensitivity

of germinated spores to dicloran in 24 h delayed interval of inoculated peaches.
