บทคัดย่อ

Reducing poverty and protecting the environment.

An examination is presented of the potential of developing agricultural sustainability even within areas that are less-favoured (by either man or nature) in developing countries. Investing in less-favoured areas can improve soil fertility, and halt erosion by focusing on non-conventional strategies, and beginning to encourage non-agricultural or postharvest activities. Strategies are briefly outlined that will enable such development: improving technologies and farming systems; ensuring secure property rights and effective institutions; managing risk effectively; and providing the right policy environment. The benefits of such strategies are presented in conclusion.
