During 1991-93 in the Ukraine, the phenolic compound contents of susceptible (Nezabudka and Kaskad Polis'kii) and resistant (intermediately resistant Lugovs'ka and Zov and more resistant Svitanok kiivs'kii and Gatchins'ka) potatoes, healthy or inoculated with Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora and E. c. subsp. atroseptica, was investigated. The results showed that phenolic compounds increased potato resistance to storage diseases. Differences in phenolic compound contents were found between resistant and susceptible and between healthy and inoculated potatoes. Healthy potatoes of the resistant cultivars showed phenolic compound contents 22.8% higher than the susceptible ones. The contents of the phenolic compounds in the resistant cultivars increased by 3-6% and those in susceptible by 56-58%. In artificial inoculations, the contents increased by 43% in the resistant and by 18% in the susceptible cultivars over the whole storage period. In inoculated potatoes of resistant cultivars, the conten
ts of the phenolic compounds were significantly higher than those in the susceptible ones at all stages of the storage period.
