Persimmon industry and research activities in Japan.

Persimmon is the the fourth ranked fruit crop in Japan and produced an estimated 302 000 t in 1994. The main growing areas are Fukuoka, Nara and Gifu Prefectures and the most important astringent and nonastringent cultivars grown there are listed. Early ripening, large fruit and high quality are important breeding objectives. Other research programmes include training to reduce tree height, protected cropping, postharvest studies to remove astringency and physiological aspects of fruit set, fruit development and tannin production in the fruit.
