In a study on 8-year-old T-bar- and pergola-trained kiwifruit vines, fruits were located within the canopy using a surveyor's theodolite. Fruits were individually labelled at the time of mapping for subsequent identification during postharvest analysis. All fruits were harvested on the same day and stored at 0 deg C for 12 weeks. Fruits with superior characteristics (required commercial size and shape, above-average soluble solids concentration and flesh firmness, and below-average water content) accounted for only a small proportion of the total fruits on the pergola vines (20%) and the T-bar vines (12%). The majority of fruits (50-52%) from vines on both trellis types were of mixed quality (required size and shape, but below average in either deg Brix or flesh firmness). The superior fruits tended to be located in the denser parts of the canopy close to the cordon, while fruits with less desirable attributes were from the extremities of the canopy where the leaf area index was low. Fruits from
the inner zones of the canopy, especially those close to the ground on the T-bar vines, also had less desirable characteristics than fruits from zones in the outer canopy.
