In 1994, the weather in Aug., almost tropical with humid mists, caused severe pressure towards the development of diseases of the harvested fruits in areas of France where peaches and nectarines were grown, despite preventive measures carried out. Subsequent investigations with various fungicides and resistant varieties are reviewed. Amongst fungi identified on contaminated fruits, 60% were identified as Monilia laxa [Monilinia laxa], 18% Rhizopus and 6% Botrytis. Formerly, Monilinia fructigena had been the major fungus on the fruits, while M. laxa had been present mainly on the flowers and branches. No explanation has been found for this change in behaviour. The effects of fertilizers and irrigation were investigated, and some influence of microclimate on the infection of ripe fruit was recorded. Some useful precautions that can be taken are listed. These relate to varietal susceptibility to problems of storage of the harvested fruits, orchard sanitation, adjusting fertilizer composition, reduc
ing irrigation at the onset of maturity, disinfecting storage areas, avoiding damage during harvesting, and taking temp. into account.
