Market surveys of the major aubergine (Solanum melongena) growing areas in West Bengal were conducted during 1994 and 1995. The percentage loss of aubergine fruits and percentage incidence of pathogens causing fruit rot diseases were recorded. Phytophthora nicotianae var. nicotianae was the predominant pathogen and other fungi commonly isolated were Curvularia lunata [Cochliobolus lunatus], Fusarium oxysporum, Phomopsis vexans, Pythium aphanidermatum, P. debaryanum and Rhizopus stolonifer. Maximum incidence of fruit rot occurred during the monsoon months of June to October when temperatures and relative humidity usually remain high.
