The cut flower industry is a relatively new addition to the traditional production mix in Malaysia. The value of cut flower production almost trebled during the 1988-94 period with exports increasing 12-fold. Domestic demand for cut flowers absorbs less than 25% of production but is growing. Future prospects for the industry are explored. The main constraints to more rapid local floriculture industry development are the lack of modern technical production skills among farmers, the need for improved postharvest handling techniques, and improving product presentation. The three main production areas for flowers in Malaysia are outlined.
