Two separate trials were conducted in 1994-96 in a mature kiwifruit cv. Hayward orchard in the Po valley of Italy. Soil in this orchard had a high exchangeable Ca concentration (>3000 ppm). In the first trial, N was applied at 50, 150 or 250 kg/ha annually within 10 weeks of bud burst. In the second trial, Ca was applied (at approx equal to 3 kg/ha to the leaves or at 9 or 40 kg/ha to the soil) during vegetative growth. Cumulative fruit yields were not significantly different at the 2 higher N rates but were higher than at the lowest N rate. N rate had no effect on postharvest quality. Ca application by either means had no effect on total Ca, Ca-pectate or soluble Ca concentrations in the fruit flesh. Ca had no effect on firmness or rotting due to Botrytis cinerea. It is concluded that applying Ca on such Ca-rich soils is ineffective with regard to fruit quality.
