Fuerte avocado fruits could be stored for 8 weeks at 5 deg C, without the appearance of any significant chilling injury symptoms, in 40 x 70 cm polyethylene (PE) bags of 30 micro m thickness with elevated (5-7%) CO2 concentrations combined with reduced (3-5%) O2 concentrations within the bags. The modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) significantly reduced fruit weight loss such that at the end of a 6.5-week storage period at 5 deg C and an additional shelf-life period at 20 deg C until ripening, fruits sealed in MAP lost only 5% of their initial weight, whereas unpacked fruits lost about 11% of their initial weight. Ethylene accumulated within the sealed bags to a concentration of around 0.2 micro l/litre, which did not affect fruit ripening. The results suggest that MAP can be a reliable method for commercial storage of Fuerte avocado fruits when a storage period of up to 8 weeks is desired.
