Onion production in the southeast of Buenos Aires province, Argentina is almost exclusively restricted to the cultivar Valcatorce INTA. Although the cultivation of earlier onion cultivars has been proposed, almost no information about the behaviour of these cultivars in this region is available. In this work, 6 other cultivars differing in cycle length were compared with Valcatorce in trials at Balcarce. According to the results, it was concluded that the early cultivars studied should be cultivated exclusively for immediate consumption, due to their short postharvest life. Valcatorce had the best postharvest behaviour and acceptable yields, although Armada appeared to be an interesting alternative. The use of several parameters as indicators of postharvest life was evaluated.
