The effect of chitosan, grapefruit seed extracts (GFSE) and sodium hypochlorite gas on the control of mycotoxin-producing pathogens in postharvest grains was investigated. Among the treatments, sodium hypochlorite gas gave the highest control effect on wheat, soyabean and maize seed maintained under natural conditions after harvest, GFSE gave little control but chitosan had no effect. Sodium hypochlorite gas gave the strongest control of the major mycotoxin producing pathogens (Penicillium spp. Aspergillus spp. and Fusarium spp.), whereas GFSE gave little control. Sodium hypochlorite gas was effective when the grains were treated with the gas for >24 hours.
