An overview is given of studies of important postharvest physiology and flower handling problems, focusing on the following subjects: (1) the importance of sensitivity to ethylene in pollination-induced petal senescence and the role of short chain fatty acids; (2) regulation of the gravitropic response of cut flowers and the role of cytosolic calcium; and (3) senescence of flowers that does not involve ethylene production or sensitivity. The model system for these studies was Phalaenopsis spp.
