Ethylene scrubbing during storage reduced weight loss of fruits of apple cv. Tsugaru by half compared to fruits in conventional storage. The residual effect of ethylene scrubbing remained, regardless of the postharvest treatment, even after exposure to simulated marketing temperatures (10 or 20 deg C). Application of a high molecular weight chitosan spray coating was effective in maintaining fruit firmness only when ethylene scrubbing was also carried out. Chitosan did not adversely affect the appearance of fruits and is considered a potential alternative to wax for maintaining the freshness of Tsugaru apples.
