Measuring of the firmness properties of maize seed for postharvest processing.

This work aimed to solve problems encountered during the postharvest processing of maize for seed. The agrophysical (firmness) properties of maize grains were investigated in laboratory conditions. Under static load, maize grain has the highest firmness at a moisture content of 22-25% dry basis. When the moisture content was over 30% (d.b) the firmness reduced. The temperature of grain has an influence on firmness during loading, grain with a +5 to +10 deg C temperature being strongest. The results have been used to design technology for postharvest processing.
