The large corn borer (Prostephanus truncatus) has caused considerable postharvest losses in Africa since being introduced on imported maize. The study uses the example of South Togo to quantify postharvest losses in traditional maize storage systems with and without biological controls and also to describe the farming system including the storage methods. The economics of biological control are compared with those of other common systems and the effects of biological control on farm and household results under various scenarios are analysed. Finally recommendations are made on advice to be given on small farm storage protection.
