Influence of agronomic-cultural factors on the development of Monilinia laxa in the post-harvest phase.

Experiments were conducted in Romagna, Italy, in 1995-97 to identify the critical period and the most significant variables for the predisposition of fruits of peach and nectarine to infections of Monilinia spp., especially in the postharvest phase. The effects of different agronomic practices, chemical defence strategies and processing conducted in the warehouses on the rates of infection were analysed. It is concluded that chemical defence strategies with particular products in the pre-harvest phase offer the best opportunity for controlling the pathogen on postharvest fruits, but the importance of varietal choice, agronomic practices, care during harvesting and hygiene of the containers must not be undervalued.
