The efficacy of new active ingredients against Monilinia laxa and M. fructigena on postharvest fruits of peach (cv. Nectaross) was evaluated in field studies in Piedmont, Italy, in 1996-97. One or two treatments were effected at various times before harvest. In 1996, the efficacy of the active ingredients was generally satisfactory, especially when 2 treatments were made at 14 and 7 days before harvest, either both with tebuconazole or the first with cyprodinil + fludioxonil and the second with cyproconazole. In 1997, however, changing climatic conditions and a lower pressure of the disease led to the same products giving contradictory results and in general the mean level of efficacy was lower. It is concluded that it is difficult to define a standard strategy of control against Monilinia spp. on postharvest peaches, but that it is necessary to exploit the combined action of agronomic practices, techniques of storage and fungicide treatments in the pre-harvest phase.
