Prevention of the post-harvest development of rots on peaches and nectarines.

Legislation in Italy does not allow treatments with pesticides on harvested fruits of peach and nectarine, and techniques of pre-refrigeration [hydrocooling], storage and transport do not completely reduce the incidence of Monilinia laxa on postharvest fruits. Studies were conducted in Romagna, Italy, in 1996-97 to investigate the effectiveness of applying fungicides in the phase immediately prior to harvest in preventing the development of M. laxa on fruits in the postharvest phase. A table is presented giving a scheme of pre-harvest treatments as a function of the factors predisposing attacks by M. laxa. It is indicated that when the factors predisposing to infection are average, two treatments need to be effected near to harvest, using tebuconazole (12.5 g a.i./100 litres) in the first and tebuconazole or cyproconazole (2 g a.i./100 litres) in the second. When using only tebuconazole, the first treatment should be effected at 15 days prior to harvest and the second at 7 days. If using tebucon

azole followed by cyproconazole, the first treatment should be effected at 7-10 days before harvest and the second at 3 days. When the predisposing factors are low, only one treatment should be effected: tebuconazole at 12.5 g a.i./100 litres at 7 days before harvest or cyproconazole at 2 g a.i./100 litres at 3 days before harvest. When predisposing factors are high, three treatments are necessary: tebuconazole at 18.7 g a.i/100 litres at 20-25 days before harvest, tebuconazole at 12.5 g a.i./100 litres at 7-10 days before harvest and cyproconazole at 2 g a.i./100 litres at 3 days before harvest.
