Design and performance of a fruit firmness grader.

The accuracy of an automatic fruit firmness grader (SoftSort) with respect to penetrometer measurements was compared to the accuracy of hand graders of kiwifruits in packhouse trials during the 1995 repack season. In the middle of the season (September) the automatic grader achieved a soft fruit rejection rate of 93% ( plus or minus 5%) at a loss of 8% ( plus or minus 3%) of the firm fruits. With hand grading 96% ( plus or minus 3%) of the soft fruits were rejected at the same loss of 8% ( plus or minus 6%) of firm fruits.
