Quality of muscadine grapes as influenced by elevated CO2 and reduced O2 atmosphere.

Berries of muscadine grapes (Vitis rotundifolia, cv. Higgin) were hand-harvested at the late maturity and early ripening stage. After precooling, the berries were kept for 4 weeks in 20% CO2 + 3% O2 in glass jars at 1-2 deg C and 90-95% RH. Samples were withdrawn weekly to determine fruit quality attributes. The results indicated that muscadine grapes can be stored for 2.5 to 3 weeks under cold controlled atmosphere storage conditions with no appreciable damage.
