Oncidium cv. Gower Ramsey cut flower vase life was extended by a postharvest recut. Supplementing the vase water with 4% or 6% sucrose also significantly prolonged vase life, but 8-HQS had less effect. Preservative mixtures of 4% sucrose and 50, 100 or 200 mg 8-HQS/litre increased the percentage of open florets on flower stalks compared with stalks in water or sucrose or 8-HQS alone. Data are also presented on the effects on flower colour values.
