Penicillium rot is one of the most common postharvest diseases of apple. Penicillium usually occurs on wounded fruits from inoculum naturally present in stores. Due to tolerance of benzimidazole fungicides, control consists of prophylaxis using disinfectants in cold chambers and reducing wound risks. Assessment of the risk of Penicillium infection is possible with Airtest, an aerobiocollector specially adapted to collect airborne spores of fungi. Many species of other fungi have been found such as Botrytis, Alternaria or Rhizopus. It is suggested that this method could be used to compare the efficacy of disinfectants.
