Ethylene content and evolution were determined in melon fruits harvested 40, 45 or 50 days after anthesis (DAA) and stored at normal [room?] or cold temperatures. Ethylene concentration in fruits and ethylene evolution increased with fruit maturity. Changes in ethylene evolution were regular and 2 peaks were observed before fruits began to rot. Low temperature storage reduced the rate of ethylene evolution, delayed the appearance of the 2 ethylene peaks, and prolonged storage life. Storage life decreased with increasing maturity. Postharvest quality was also studied. Different harvest dates influenced SSC content before storage, but not VC [ascorbic acid] content or acidity.
