Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of postharvest hot water treatment, sulfur (S) fumigation followed by HCl solution dip, packing methods and storage conditions on the quality, weight loss and respiration rate of L. chinensis (cv. Heiye) fruits. S fumigation + acid dip, S fumigation alone or hot water treatment + acid dip significantly increased fruit peel acidity (pH 5.12, 5.33 and 4.84, respectively) compared to the control treatment (pH 5.65), without affecting the total soluble solids content or acidity of the pulp. Weight loss of fruits was markedly lower in plastic boxes without holes than when fruits were unpacked or packed in boxes with holes. Heat-treated fruits had similar weight loss patterns to control fruits at 4 deg C. Fruit respiration rate decreased sharply as weight loss decreased during the early phase of storage, but became stable during later stages. Fruits stored at 4 deg C had markedly lower respiration rates than those stored at 21 or 35 deg C. The relatio
nship between fruit weight loss and respiration rate was also investigated.
