Breaking into the mainstream with cactus pears: improved varieties, marketing, and pitahaya.

The key to breaking into the mainstream with cactus pears [Opuntia spp.] in the USA is to produce better tasting fruits. Efforts are underway to breed improved cultivars. Growers can also affect the quality by correct choice of growing area, cultural practices and harvesting when ripe, rather than when immature. Postharvest factors are also important. Suggestions for marketing are discussed. Pitahaya [Hylocereus undatus] has potential, but the taste is variable and often bland; it is also difficult to grow.
