Cut flowers of the rose cultivar Raktagandha were pulsed with sucrose, silver thiosulphate (STS) or silver nitrate (AgNO3) at various concentrations for different durations. Pulsing with 6% sucrose for 12 h, 0.5 mM STS for 45 minutes or 1 mM AgNO3 for 15 minutes improved the vase life and quality of the cut flowers, with STS giving the best results (vase life increased from 7 days in non-pulsed controls to 11.25 days). Increased vase life was associated with a rise in total soluble sugars and the lowest content of total free amino acids content in petal tissues throughout senescence.
