Time of day at harvest effect on postharvest lettuce quality.

Pre-harvest conditions such as cultivar, season and time of harvest during the day influence lettuce quality and postharvest behaviour. The effect of time of harvest (06.00, 12.00 or 18.00 h, between 23 October and 26 December, 1996) on the quality and storage life of butterhead lettuces (cv. Kagramer Sommer) and Latin lettuces (cv. Crimor), grown in the field, was investigated. After harvest, lettuces were stored at ambient temperature (25-28 deg C, 60-80% RH) or at 8 deg C, 70% RH, either unwrapped or in PD 961 EZ bags. Daily weight losses and sensory observations (colour, brightness, decay and freshness) were measured. Significant differences were observed between storage periods (4, 8 and 12 days) for unwrapped treatments at both temperatures, and for wrapped treatments at ambient temperature. Wrapped lettuces stored at 8 deg C exhibited better quality during storage than unwrapped lettuces stored at ambient temperature. Weight losses were related to cultivar, storage treatment and time of h

arvest. Butterhead lettuces exhibited better quality in storage when harvested at 18.00 h whereas Latin lettuces exhibited better storage behaviour when harvested at 06.00 h.
