An instrumented sphere, the PMS-60, was used as an artificial potato tuber for the objective evaluation of forces causing mechanical damage to tubers and for localization of these forces. Experiments were conducted to determine loads on potatoes through various parts of the postharvest handling system. The maximum load, 113 N, occurred at the overfall from a band conveyor, a drop of 450 mm. Other significant loads were the overfall into the rake conveyor (66.3 N), and in the cascade (filling part of the system, 84.3 N). Junctions of conveyors had an average force of 46.7 N in the receiving part and 73.5 N in the filling part of the system. As a comparison, a fall of 1 m onto concrete imparted a force of 286 N.
