Steps towards sustainable tropical fruit production in the Soconusco.

Fruit growing in the Soconusco, Estate Chiapas, Mexico, is characterized by a great diversity of tropical fruit species with 84 species from 33 plant families. First results of studies and research with different tropical fruit crops show that this zone is able to develop sustainable fruit production with good opportunities. Examples of bananas, mango, papaya and rambutan cultivation demonstrate the opportunities for sustainable crop management in the future. A description of harvest methods, postharvest technologies and trade in bananas, plantain and mangos concludes the paper.
