Apple fruit (cv. Liaofu) pulp and peel discs, 0.5 cm in diameter and 0.2 cm thick, and seeds were held in 0.1-20 mmol salicylic acid (SA)/litre for 6-48 h. SA inhibited ethylene evolution from pulp and peel discs, with the degree of inhibition increasing as SA concentration increased. Treatment duration had no effect on inhibition rates. SA also inhibited ethylene evolution from apple seeds, but to a lesser extent than from pulp and peel discs. The results suggest that SA may be used for controlling ripening and senescence in apple fruits.
