In a 4-year trial, chrysanthemum cut-flower quality was substantially improved by changing the precooling method. A small forced air cooling facility was constructed, in which packed chrysanthemum flowers can be cooled down to 5 deg C within 1 h (compared with >10 h by traditional room cooling). The chrysanthemum flowers maintained good quality on the auction market in Japan even after being fumigated. In 2 years, 30 containers of chrysanthemum flowers have been treated by this method with good results.
