Taiwanese imports of Dutch gladiolus and lily bulbs increased rapidly in the 1990s. In 1996, Taiwan imported 72.5 million gladiolus corms and 42.7 million lily bulbs. Between 1991 and 1996, the production acreage of gladiolus corms in the Netherlands decreased 500 ha to about 1200 ha. Over the same period, lily bulb acreage increased 1000 ha, reaching a total area of more than 3500 ha. BKD plays an important role in the Dutch bulb business, being responsible for the investigation of bulb quality and maintaining the quality standard to match the government certification. As well as BKD, there are two organizations, LBO and IBC, which are responsible for technique research, and marketing and promotion, respectively. The quality of bulbs from the Netherlands for autumn and winter seasons in Taiwan is unstable because of the long-term storage of bulbs. Ultra low oxygen storage is developing to overcome this disadvantage. Moving the production area to the Southern Hemisphere is another way of resolvi
ng this seasonal difficulty.
