This article discusses whether industrial investment means secure job generation in the economy. It takes as an example the restructuring process of the Brazilian textile agroindustry, which has traditionally been seen as a large employment generator for the country. It examines the economic indicators of this industry, which has experienced productivity, spatial and technological restructuring. Specifically, it examines how the process of change has affected employment in the industry in recent years. Results show that the restructuring process brought about capital concentration and progressive reduction in employment. It is concluded that modernisation of the Brazilian textile industry is slow. Investment in restructuring has resulted in the adoption of technology with high levels of automation, which has led to job losses. To overcome the unemployment problem, it is suggested that new market segments be developed, e.g. the fruit sector, to generate new employment. The investment would be in
providing postharvest and distribution logistics. Another possibility is to stimulate non-agricultural activity in the rural environment, such as ecotourism. The investment here would be in infrastructure and education.
