Cultural techniques for high quality, high production and high profits in apple orchards in the arid loess plateau.

During 1991-95, various practices were applied in 4- to 8-year-old apple orchards. Results showed that using appropriate rootstocks (Malus micromalus and M. sieversii) and cultivars (Fuji, Qinguan, Jonagold, Orin and Starkrimson), applying intensive soil and fertilizer management, moderate pruning and fruit thinning, defoliating and turning the fruits [postharvest?], and ensuring good control of diseases and pests could result in annual production of 33.75 t of top quality fruits/ha.
