Experiments were carried out on a 10-year-old orchard of Conference pears on quince BA29 rootstocks in the Po valley on a soil with a low N content. Applying N in the spring (at fruit set) increased fruit concentrations more than summer applications, though the latter increased fruit size and was more likely to be retained by the tree into the next growing season. Ca sprays (200 mg CaO/litre) every 10-15 days throughout the growing season, had little effect on postharvest ripening or storage times, since increased Ca was concentrated in the peel and not the flesh. It is suggested that improving uptake of Ca through the roots would prove more effective.
