Quality of Galia type melon during refrigerated storage.

Fruits of melon cv. Galia were harvested at maturity stage II (green with initial colour development and peduncle attached) and selected for good external characteristics. They were then treated with prochloraz (300 ml/litre), dried at room temperature, packed and stored at 7 plus or minus 1 deg C and 88 plus or minus 3% RH for 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 or 35 days. Fruit weight and flesh firmness decreased during storage, but there was no correlation between fruit softening and increasing soluble pectin contents. Soluble solids content, total sugars and non-reducing sugars decreased significantly (p<0.05) during storage, but reducing sugars content was not affected by the storage period. Total ascorbic acid and total chlorophyll contents of fruits decreased during storage. Based on the postharvest quality observations, fruits of melon cv. Galia were considered suitable for storage for up to 26 days at 7 deg C (including 1 day prior to storage). Fruit appearance deteriorated after this period.
