Postharvest market life potential of some plum fruit cultivars (Prunus domestica L.) grown in Poland.

Fruits of plum cultivars Valor, Bluefre, Amers, Stanley and Dabrowicka Prune [Dabrowice Prune] were harvested on 2 or 3 dates (at 3- to 6-day intervals in August/September 1993-95) from orchards at the Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture, Skierniewice, Poland. Ethylene production, soluble solids content, firmness and incidence of physiological disorders were evaluated at harvest and after 2 and 4 weeks of storage of fruits at 4, 1 or -0.5 deg C. All fruits were severely damaged after 2 weeks storage at 4 deg C, and it was only possible to store fruits of 4 cultivars for 2 weeks at 1 deg C. Storage at -0.5 deg C reduced ethylene production, softening and weight loss of plum fruits compared to storage at higher temperatures. Fruits of plum cv. Valor were the most suitable for storage at -0.5 deg C. After 4 weeks storage at that temperature followed by 3 days at room temperature, >90% of fruits were acceptable for fresh consumption. It is suggested that fruits of plum cultivars Valor, B

luefre, Dabrowice Prune, Amers and Stanley can be stored at 0.5 deg C for 4-6, 3-4, 3-4, 3-4 and 2-3 weeks, respectively.
